We're using Domino/Notes in a 25-user-site. If one counts all costs and savings, Domino often is a lot cheaper than it looks at the beginning. Some good arguments :
- If good configured, you can safely use a domino server over the internet : no expensive VPN's
- Home users can use the db's localy at full speed, and replicate in a very efficient way. (short connection times)
- It's easy for non-technical people to keep their website up to date
- Of course there's the virus benefit, as often mentioned before
- One can use a rather cheap server. We're using a $1000 HP Netserver P3/1Ghz/256MB, and it runs swiftly
- One can alter and update applications without touching a single client PC
- Lotus has very flexible compatibility scheme. You can mix old and new servers and clients. That was for me the greatest disadvantage of Access applications : every time when there was a change on the client size (new version of Office, or even a new version of IE) it was trouble time. With Notes I'm using R4.5 applictions in R6 without one modification. This is a huge saving.
